How young people convinced a corporation to protect the Reef
After a four-month campaign by AYCC members, Lend Lease (one of Australia’s biggest construction companies) publicly confirmed that they would withdraw from the Abbot Point coal project – the proposed coal port Great Barrier Reef waters!
This is a significant step forward in our campaign to protect the Reef and the climate from a huge planned expansion in coal ports. AYCC members helped us launch an open letter and petition with 36 community groups and thousands of individual names. We made a splash at Lend Lease’s Annual General Meeting, and then followed up with actions at their head office over summer – we wouldn’t leave them alone!
We need every decision-maker in Government and business to know that Australians will stand up for action on climate change and protection of our national icon, the Great Barrier Reef.
